Details
This counter distinguishes characters (counted by Unicode code points, so emoji are not double-counted) from words. English and Latin text is split into words by word boundaries, while each CJK character — Chinese hanzi, Japanese kana, or Korean hangul — counts as one word, which matches how “word count” is understood in those languages.
Lines are split by line breaks, paragraphs by blank lines, and sentences by sentence-ending punctuation in both English and Chinese. All counting happens locally in your browser with no server round-trip.
FAQ
How are words counted?
English and other Latin-script words are counted by word boundaries. Each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as one “word”. The total is the sum of both, so mixed text is handled correctly.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting runs entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is based on a common average: about 200 words per minute for English, and about 300 characters per minute for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It is an estimate, not an exact measure.
